Bruin Plate at UCLA

Overview of Work: Competition Publication & Website

I designed an entry booklet for UCLA Dining Services' newest residential restaurant, Bruin Plate, for Food Management magazine's "Best Concept Awards." I wrote the copy, which was then edited by my colleague, Christine Loh, and my supervisor, Jan Gonzales. I also designed the booklet's entire layout in Adobe InDesign within a two-week timeframe, edited all photos in Adobe Photoshop, and created custom artwork, such as data tables and graphs.

In addition to the competition entry booklet, I also created a promotional and educational website for Bruin Plate. The website included information about the restaurant's unique menus, ingredient sourcing, and nutritional facts. I hand-coded the website in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.

Food photography featured in the publication and on the website was taken by UCLA Dining Services' Menu Research & Development Coordinator, Lynley Fleak, and architectural photos were taken by Paul Turang. Bruin Plate's restaurant branding, including color scheme, font family, and logo design, were designed by my former colleague, Minh Q. Ly.

Award & Next Steps

In early July 2014, it was announced that Bruin Plate won "Best New Facility" in the "Best Concept Awards." A feature on the restaurant was published in the August 2014 edition of Food Management, and the restaurant was recognized at a national, industry-wide conference (Multi-Unit Foodservice Operators Conference - MUFSO) in early October 2014.
